The Diocese of Reno requires all lay people, paid and/or volunteers, 18 years of age and older, to participate in the Protecting God's Children program. Even though the ministry you choose does not include children under the age of 17 years, you will encounter them during your time at St. Rose. They are everywhere! This program is to heighten your awareness and just to be cognizant of your surroundings when children are present. The training makes participants aware of the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods and means by which offenders commit abuse and five easy steps one can take to prevent child sexual abuse. The training classes are offered in both Spanish and English. These two programs are offered in response to the mandate by the USCCB in the "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People."
Workshops are available throughout the diocese at various parishes, including workshops at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, which is conveniently located next door to St. Rose! The onsite workshop by a certified trainer takes about 3 hours and then it is required to complete 24 online training bulletins and a re-certification training course via the VIRTUS Online™ system, at your convenience, but within a reasonable amount of time. If you do not have access to a computer, the bulletins can be mailed to you. Online training is also available at www.virtus.org.
The dates, times of the workshops, plus more information is available at the Diocese of Reno's webpage, Safe Environment.
